KOTA KINABALU: Welfare payments will be made through banks in an effort to ensure that recipients get the money that they are entitled to, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Heng Seai Kie said.

Friday January 29, 2010 Shahrizat: Don’t rely on handouts THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will focus on productive welfare to achieve its target of eradicating hardcore poverty by the end of the year. According to its minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, this means that Malaysians must stop being complacent and not expect handouts from the Government.

Monday October 26, 2009 RM3,000 is poverty line for the urban poor By LESTER KONG and IZATUN SHAARI
PETALING JAYA: The Government has decided to set RM3,000 as the poverty line for the urban poor based on feedback from people living in major urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur.
This is according to Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin whose ministry is to be renamed Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, in efforts to improve the lives of the urban poor. |

 In conjunction with the festival of lights , Deepavali , Development of Human Resources For Rural Areas, Malaysia (DHRRA Malaysia) handed out goody bags to the underprivileged families. Around 30 families received the Diwali goodie bags which contains essential household items such as Cooking Oil, Rice, Sugar, Milo, Biscuits, Condensed Milk and Mee Hoon. |

Deepavali, also known as Diwali or Festival of Lights is celebrated widely by Hindus throughout the world. Diwali is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. In Malaysia, it’s a celebration anticipated by all including the non Hindus.
In the spirit of giving, DHRRA Malaysia took the opportunity to make the celebration extra special for some underprivileged families. In continuing the tradition for the 4 years, about 500 goodie bags were distributed in three locations in 3 different states for the year 2007: Sungai Petani (100 bags), Dengkil (200 bags) and Taiping (200 bags). These goodie bags contain many different types of food items which includes rice, flour, oil, Ribena and biscuits. All these items were given in courtesy of Giant and Maybank. |

Festive season is the time for celebration. Everyone forgets and forgives each other during these seasons. It’s a time for merrymaking and to appreciate those around us. All worries and problems are pushed aside to make way for smiles, laughs and joyful moments. With the aim to brighten the lives of underprivileged women during festive seasons, DHRRA Community Centers have organized many special events for these women for almost two years now. This includes cultural performances and distribution of goodie bags.

 The Tamil schools in Malaysia have always been in the limelight of the Tamil media. The Tamil medium school has posed a great concern for Indian society. Despite producing well grounded individuals, successful entrepreneurs, pioneers and renowned leader, Tamil medium schools still suffers due to lack of facilities: infrastructural and educational. Realizing the plight of the Tamil school and the need for support, DHRRA Community Centre has been shouldering the responsibility to work towards the betterment of these schools. For a start, these efforts are focused among the Tamil schools in the district Larut, Matang & Selama. As one of it’s effort, DHRRA Community Centre, on a yearly basis, provides fund for individual students and schools that has performed well for the UPSR examination. The aim of this effort is to increase the quality of education in Tamil schools.
