2010/07/23 WORKERS involved in accidents at work are covered by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) even if their employers have not submitted their contributions to the organisation.Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan said Socso would cover the workers' medical claims, but the employers would be fined for failing to submit their contributions. Maznah said that 5,416 out of 724,290 employers or 1.6 per cent registered with Socso had failed to submit contributions for their workers last year. She said among the reasons given for their failure was a high worker turnover rate. "Some of the workers even resigned before the company managed to get them to register with Socso, or they left before the contributions could be made."She was replying to a question from Datuk Mohammed Najeeb Abdullah who wanted to know why more than 50 per cent of employers did not contribute to Socso for their employees, and the measures taken to ensure that these employees were protected. Maznah added that there were some companies which had ceased operations because of losses or high debt, while some employers failed to contribute because they had just started their business and were not financially stable.Maznah also said that as of August 2009, Socso enforcement officers had inspected 21,370 premises nationwide in Ops Kesan Perkeso. "Out of that, 4,173 employers were found to have failed to make contributions and 2,810 were compounded."Socso also filed 305 cases against employers in the court."She said for last month, 14.5 per cent of the 20,509 employers checked by Socso had not paid their contributions.
