'Late' parents have to provide proof

2010/07/22

PARENTS who register the birth of their children late should provide "strong evidence" that the births really took place in Malaysia, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said as responsible parents, they must furnish the National Registration Department (NRD) with supporting documents to support their late applications and registrations.
"NRD will not accept late registration of births and those without supporting documents or strong proof that the child was born in Malaysia.

"The department will inform the applicants via letters the reasons their late birth applications were rejected," he said in reply to Senator Pau Chiong Ung.

Lee said that verification of late birth registrations in Sabah and Sarawak came under the purview of the district registrar.

He said that the ministry hoped to solve the issue of late birth registrations and personal identification documents, especially in remote parts of Sabah and Sarawak, by the end of next year.

"Those who failed to provide supporting documents of late birth registration can still re-submit their applications to the NRD."
