NRD to accept passport applications

By DHARMENDER SINGH

PUTRAJAYA: The public can soon apply for passports at selected National Registration Department (NRD) branches, where one normally applies for a MyKad . For a start, the soon-to-be-launched service will be available at the Puchong, Kepong and Gombak NRD offices.Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said the ministry wants to make it easier for the public to apply for passports by introducing Joint-Use Counters at NRD offices under a pilot project. The public no longer need to go to the Immigration Department.

Lee said the counters, which involves collaboration between the NRD and the Immigra-tion Department, would increase services at the NRD offices as well as the number of places to apply for passports. He said the ministry would eventually extend the service to other NRD branches.“The creation of the special counters is part of the Home Ministry’s ongoing efforts to increase the efficiency of its services and up-grade its public delivery system,” he said at the ministry’s monthly gathering here yesterday.Lee said the ministry had also asked all departments and agencies to increase the number of services provided online. He also reminded departments and agencies to start early with their plans for projects under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

On efforts to curb human trafficking activities, Lee said the ministry, through the Anti-Trafficking of Persons Council (Mapo), had launched various initiatives including raising public awareness on the matter.
As a result, the 2010 Trafficking of Persons Report released by the United States earlier this month had upgraded Malaysia’s position to tier-two on the watch list from tier-three the previous year.Lee said it was not impossible for the country to have itself listed in tier-one.
