2010/02/02By Evangeline Majawat KUALA LUMPUR: The government is looking at limiting National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans to only cover the tuition fees. This is one of the possible solutions contained in a study carried out by the Higher Education Ministry to rein in PTPTN’s growing budget. Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said his ministry was weighing the amount and criteria for PTPTN loan applicants. At present, a PTPTN loan pays for the student’s tuition fees and subsistence. Khaled said while full loans would still be given out, the criteria and vetting process would be more stringent. “Right now, we’re paying for everything (tuition fees and subsistence),” he said yesterday. “The study will look into who should be eligible and whether PTPTN will cover the full cost or only the tuition fees." http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/articles/20100202075027/Article/index_html |
