DHRRA Malaysia is a voluntary non-profit and non-political organization registered in 2006 under the Societies Act of Malaysia 1966. It evolved from what was formerly known as MasDHRRA (1974-1998) and later, DHRRA Network Malaysia (1999 – 2005) that worked towards organizing a strong rural and self-reliant community through poverty alleviation and people’s empowerment initiatives.
Asha dedicated her life for the family since young. She helped with the upbringing 9 of her siblings. She was always proud of her big family. On the other hand, her father held no proper job. The main reason for this was his uncontrollable drinking habits. Moreover, fights frequently occurred between her parents. When Asha was 15 years old, a quarrel started of like any other daily quarrel. However, it changed Asha’s life. During the argument, it was revealed by the father that Asha was adopted. Very soon, quoting poverty and hardship, her adoptive father asked her to leave the house. To top this all… Asha had no legal identification.

The setting up of the community centres was not an idea that was picked off the air. Since 1998, ERA Consumer has been implementing human rights training program targeting youth, women, political parties, urban pioneers etc imparting knowledge about the rights as human beings and citizens of Malaysia. It was through these programs we found that Indian women are still trapped by the fear of stigmatization from the society and are constrained by the archaic cultural norms imposed upon them.
